Australian criminal records available online

Australian's can now check out the criminal behaviour of their friends and neighbours online for just $6 dollars (£2.25) using a new service from Crime Net.
This new service has attracting considerable criticism from Australian civil libertarians, but also proved so popular on its first day that the Web site was almost brought down by around 5,000 visitors per hour.
Manager of Crime Net, Roy Hampton, is a former police detective for Victoria and denies the site is an attack on civil liberties. He told one Australian news service: "If somebody has handed over their civil rights by being involved in a major crime then that is their fault and the public has a right to know."
Hampton told the same news service that the site's database of past misdemeanours had been built up mainly from news paper reports.
