Net to end Great British Car Rip-0ff

Consumers fed up with spending a fortune on a new car will be able to save thousands as the Consumers' Association launches its carbusters.com Web site.
As part of its Great British Car Rip-Off campaign, the Consumers' Association has set up an online car import scheme, which it claims will save consumers an average of £3,500 on the cost of buying a car. The association will not make any profit from sales, although it will charge an administration fee.
A trial Carbusters.com service has been running for the past three months, during which 83 cars were ordered. To herald the launch of the site, Consumers' Association director Sheila McKechnie delivered two new Ford Focuses to Which? members Dr Tony Lewis and his wife, saving the couple nearly £6,500.
"Carbusters.com is a straight challenge to the car manufacturers in the UK to stop treating the UK as Treasure Island," said McKechnie. "Carbusters.com will put the manufacturers' unfair pricing regime further under the spotlight and will at long last give the public the opportunity to beat the manufacturers and buy cars at a fair price."
The Consumers' Association is also urging people to email Trade and Industry secretary Stephen Byers and write to car manufacturers as part of its campaign to end high car prices in the UK.
