One of the largest independent record labels in Europe, the Ministry of Sound, is to provide direct digital downloads of music tracks.

The company has partnered with RioPort, which will be providing the audio distribution solutions, including the encoding and secure packing.

The Ministry of Sound, including the Web site, record label, and club state that it is "definitely" committed to pushing the future of digital music distribution. To start with, though, it is making a fairly tentative step in that direction, with just five of the label's top tracks available for download. The tracks will initially be available for promotional use only and will expire after five days.

The company plans to expand this service very quickly and aims to provide its entire back catalogue, as well as material from other labels, available for purchase by via digital download.

"The advent of sampling mechanisms in the 1970s resulted in the explosion of dance music and since its development it has been shaped by technical innovation," said James Bethell, CEO Ministry of Sound Digital. "We'll provide this same experience to our online audience."

Ministry of Sound will also be supplying 100 tracks to the RioPort digital audio site.

While full medical records may be of (dubious) value at rear/base medical facilities, these could be provided much simpler by either physical disk or electronic transfer to an "in theatre" database for individuals posted in. That £80m (and it's associated running costs) could have been far better employed in resuscitating a disbanded infantry battalion or providing a big boost in equipment quality and quantity.
