The battle between manufacturers over rival DVD formats has stepped up a notch with the announcement of a brand new format from electronics giant Pioneer.

The format, DVD-R/W, was unveiled at the Internationale Funkausstellung 99 show in Germany last week. DVD-R/W muddies the water still further by not being compatible with either Phillips' DVD+RW, or the DVD Forum's DVD-RAM,.

Sharp, which is supporting the new format, was showing prototype players at the show.
