Emerging tech Toolkit

Cisco, MS, Intel push networked multimedia apps

Yesterday at Internet World in Los Angeles, the trio announced the Networked Multimedia Connection (NMC), a programme intended to simplify development and uptake of interactive learning, publishing and videoconferencing apps by working on standards and supporting developers, service providers and resellers with toolkits and lab testing facilities.

"We believe that Cisco, Intel and Microsoft together can help make multimedia, over intranets and the Internet, a business-critical technology in 1997," said David Cole, vice president of the Internet client and collaboration division at Microsoft.

While full medical records may be of (dubious) value at rear/base medical facilities, these could be provided much simpler by either physical disk or electronic transfer to an "in theatre" database for individuals posted in. That £80m (and it's associated running costs) could have been far better employed in resuscitating a disbanded infantry battalion or providing a big boost in equipment quality and quantity.
