The system exhibited was a modified version of the Performa 5400. Apple said it expected to ship Macs with DVD-ROM by the end of the year, to be followed by PowerBook notebooks early in 1998. It also announced support for the format in the largest part of the Macintosh desktop line.

"Just as Apple was the first computer vendor to standardise on CD-ROM ten years ago, we now expect to take a leadership position with Macintosh and DVD-ROM," said Carlos Montalvo, vice president of Apple's Interactive Media Group in a prepared statement.

Apple also said it plans to build a DVD Web site for users and developers.

While full medical records may be of (dubious) value at rear/base medical facilities, these could be provided much simpler by either physical disk or electronic transfer to an "in theatre" database for individuals posted in. That £80m (and it's associated running costs) could have been far better employed in resuscitating a disbanded infantry battalion or providing a big boost in equipment quality and quantity.
