Orange has cut its rates for its business mobile broadband package, offering services starting at £7.50 a month for existing SME voice customers.

Between 1 May and 31 July, existing small-business customers signing new mobile-broadband contracts will receive unlimited mobile broadband from £7.50 a month, while new customers can sign up for packages starting at £10 a month. The £10 package usually costs £15 a month. Both packages are subject to a fair-use policy.

The announcement is an attempt to kickstart business adoption of mobile broadband, which has been slower than the industry expected, Ovum analyst Pauline Trotter told ZDNet UK. "Small-business owners have often been wary of mobile broadband, because it can be so hard to fathom what services will cost, but this should certainly stimulate the market, and I'd expect other operators to follow suit."

Customers signing up for the new deal with have access to Orange's range of HSUPA devices, including the ZTE MF636 dongle, which offers internet access at up to four times the speed of 3G.

Mobile-broadband adoption is growing rapidly, and the new price plans and devices are aimed at making such services more affordable and secure, Paul Tollet, vice president of business services at Orange UK, said in a statement.
