Nortel is to be the official network infrastructure supplier to the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games.

On Wednesday, the Games's organising committee announced that the communications firm will supply BT with equipment for wide area networks (WANs), local area networks (LANs), call centres and fixed telephony. Nortel will also be one of the seven 'Tier One' sponsors for the Games, as well as one of the four Sustainability Partners.

The company will get exclusive rights to use London 2012 branding within its sector.

"Nortel will be a great partner and, as well as bringing 'best in class' products to the table, will be supporting our sustainability commitments and our education programme too," said Sebastian Coe, the chair of London 2012. "We are counting on Nortel with their Olympic Games experience and breadth of expertise for mission-critical projects to ensure successful delivery of our Games requirements."

Nortel is also a sponsor of the upcoming 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in Vancouver.
