Networking equipment provider Sierra Wireless has released a USB wireless modem aimed at mobile workers looking to take advantage of the latest generation of 3G connectivity.

The AirCard 88OU USB modem could allow data uploading at speeds of up to 2Mbps for applications such as videoconferencing and live video, while handling download speeds of up to 7.2Mbps, according to Sierra. The modem uses a new technology called High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA), alongside the High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) that has been available in the UK since last year.

No UK pricing was available at the time of writing, but Sierra's cards are expected to be distributed through UK network operators — Orange and O2 already use other Sierra products. According to ZDNet.co.uk's own research, 15 percent of companies are already using HSDPA networks, but HSUPA will provide a major improvement on the 384Kbps maximum uplink speed offered by HSDPA.

This autumn Vodafone will become the first operator to roll out HSUPA connectivity across its UK network. It will also be releasing a new USB modem to take advantage of the service.
