Microsoft has released a new version of Windows Mobile Device Center, the programme used to synchronise Windows Mobile devices with PCs running Vista.

Some users had been reporting problems with file synchronisation between their handheld devices and Vista PCs. The new version, Windows Mobile Device Center v6.1, fixes that issue and adds other synchronisation features, such as HTML mail, automatic device authentication and certificate enrolment.

Windows Mobile Device Center replaced ActiveSync as the synchronisation tool for Microsoft smartphones and pocket PCs when Vista replaced XP in January this year. Windows Mobile programme manager Mel Sampat announced the new version in his blog on Wednesday.

Put simply, what is the compelling reason to pay ~$200 extra for an Eee with Windows XP? A Windows Eee won't come with any useful applications and you'll have to buy anti-virus software to boot. The truth about low cost computing is that nobody really cares whether the machine is running Windows or Linux as long as its cheap, its easy to use and it works.
