British climber Rod Baber has allegedly set the record for the highest-ever land-based mobile-phone call and text message. The call was made from 8,848m on the highest peak of Mount Everest at 5.37am on Monday. Baber was using a Motorola MOTO Z8 handset.

Reception on Everest is possible as a base station in China has line-of-sight with the mountain's north ridge. Communications links have also been improved by the fact that a climbing team from the Chinese army is planning to take the Olympic Torch to the top of Everest.

The truth about low cost computing is that nobody really cares whether the machine is running Windows or Linux as long as its cheap, its easy to use and it works.
