Arun Sarin, Vodafone's chief executive, officially opened the CeBIT trade show in Hanover on Wednesday night by urging the technology industry to work more closely together.

Sarin delivered the keynote speech at the opening ceremony for CeBIT 2006, in which he denied that the IT and mobile industries were running out of steam.

"When people say that this is now a mature market, that the bubble is over, that we are in a deflationary business, I don't agree," said Sarin. "The closing chapter of our story is far from being written."

Sarin pointed to emerging high-speed wireless technologies such as HSDPA, which he said would encourage mobile users to download more content.

"This is why companies like Vodafone are now increasingly establishing new partnerships with other industry players such as Microsoft and Google to ensure our customers benefit from the next generation of mobile services," Sarin said.

Last month, Vodafone announced that it would start selling handsets running Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system to its business customers. It is also adding Google Search to its mobile Internet portal, Live.

CeBIT is the world's largest IT trade show, and runs from 9 to 15 March in Hanover. This year's big news will include the unveiling of products from Microsoft's Origami project.
