Ex-Sun chief takes reins at Motorola

Communications conglomerate Motorola is expected to announce former Sun Microsystems president Ed Zander as its next chief executive, according to published reports.
Motorola representatives said the company has not made any announcements thus far, but expects to over the next week. Zander did not immediately return calls for comment.
Zander has been a partner at private equity firm Silver Lake Partners, which specialises in technology. Zander left Sun in 2002.
Zander will be taking over for Christopher Galvin, whose grandfather founded Motorola.
Reuters reported that Motorola president Mike Zafirovski -- early favourite for the post -- and Zander were the two candidates in the running for the position. Galvin said in September he would resign once a successor was found.
Motorola has been grappling with layoffs and shrinking margins in many of its businesses. In October, the company announced plans to spin off its chip unit.
