A lucrative sponsorship deal between Yahoo! and Premiership football team Manchester United worth £40m was clinched Friday, according to a report on Yahoo's sports section.

According to the report Old Trafford deputy chief executive Peter Kenyon held talks with a number of big name companies including Amazon, but settled on Yahoo! Friday.

This report remains unconfirmed, however, as Yahoo! spokespeople refused to comment on the deal.

The contract between Manchester United and Sharp runs out in the summer.

In return for emblazoning the shirts of Manchester United players, Yahoo! will be used to market the football club's merchandise worldwide.

Manchester United is the wealthiest football club in the world and is the biggest British club in the history of the game.

According to the report Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will also receive around £20m to spend on new players.
