The new Sun-Netscape Alliance this week will branch out into the online trading community business. Sun Microsystems Inc. and Netscape Communications Corp. plan to roll out the Sun-Netscape Supplier Network at the Internet and Electronic Commerce Conference in New York.

Set to go live in midsummer, the Supplier Network will be a business-to-business trading site, where companies can go to purchase goods such as office supplies, said Netscape officials in Mountain View, California

It will be similar in scope to other horizontal online trading communities, such as those of e-commerce software vendors Ariba Inc. and Commerce One Inc. Netscape is getting help from Aspect Development Inc., which has a database of more than 5,000 suppliers and 3 million products, and Harbinger Corp., which will help build customised catalogue software for companies that use the Supplier Network. Charter members will include Dell Computer Corp., CompuCom Systems Inc., Office Depot Inc. and Boise Cascade Corp.

The Sun-Netscape Alliance also will announce business and technology integration with two vendors, Selectica Inc. and Trilogy Software Inc., for building applications for complex product configuration.
