A mechanism incorporating new Optically Assisted Winchester technology uses lasers, microscopic lenses and tiny mirrors to sidestep an engineering problem that has held up the entire industry, claims the manufacturer. Until now, disk drive capacity has increased by roughly 60 per cent per year, but a limit to this expansion has been looming. If Seagate's claims are correct, the $50 billion a year data storage industry will receive a major boost.

Seagate can be contacted on 0181 566 2330.
